The Summer Reading Boost
What is the Summer Reading Boost?
The Summer Reading Boost is a 1-on-1, reading intervention geared towards students finishing first grade who are struggling with learning basic reading skills. Some key components are:
- 1-on-1 online reading instruction offered by an experienced reading specialist trained in structured literacy intervention methods suitable for struggling readers.
- Engaging, yet intensive teaching to strengthen core reading skills using multisensory techniques.
- Initial reading and post-sessions evaluations, to measure progress and results. Each evaluation includes assessments to measure phonics knowledge, grade level ability, fluency, accuracy, comprehension and specific skill strengths and weaknesses.
The Summer Reading Boost Lessons Feature:
- Live online teaching for the ultimate convenience.
- 30 minute sessions to ensure maximum focus and learning for young students.
- 16 flexible sessions that can be scheduled throughout the summer.
- Each session includes: direct, multi-sensory teaching, reading & spelling practice, and wraps up with a fun "Reading Camp" game. After all, it's summer!
What is the cost?
The cost for all 16 sessions comes to $30 per session or a total of $480 for the entire summer package. This price includes a 10% discount. Payment in full is required up front.
FAQs:
Do you offer in-person sessions, as well as online? No, in order to save on costs for sessions and increase convenience and reachability, I only offer sessions online. Even though the Summer Reading Boost is geared for younger students, care has been taken to minimize difficulty with onscreen learning. A 1-on1 curated session with a live tutor is very different from an online group class or computer-based learning program with no live teacher.
Can my child use an iPad or tablet? I use the Koala Go platform for tutoring. It's compatable with PC and Mac computers, Google Chromebooks and iPads. Right now, it's not compatable with Android tablets. It is also not recommended to use phones for tutoring as the screen is too small. It's not required but having a touchscreen is helpful for younger learners. A computer mouse is recommended if you have no touchscreen.
Do you teach phonemic awareness skills? Most definitely! Phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate the individual sounds in words) is heavily incorporated in all lessons via using the use of auditory drills, sound cards, blank tiles, finger spelling and other multisensory techniques.
My child is doing well in reading. Will this course still benefit them? While your child may enjoy this course, if they are an above-average reader in school, they may likely find that it's not really challenging. The lessons are geared for children who are struggling in reading after first grade.
How can I tell for sure if my child would be a good candidate for this program? See the Summer Reading Boost Self-Screening to see if it's likely that your child would benefit from this offering. If you're still not sure, don't hesitate to reach out and discuss your questions with me.
Do I need to stay with my child during the lesson? Plan stay in the room during the first lesson, to assist your child and redirect them if needed. After that, if your child is doing well on their own, you should stay within hearing distance, but you don't need to be next to them. In some cases, a parent may be asked to remain with a child who continues to need help or supervision.
