Testimonials
Although my daughter is a strong student, she experienced difficulty with reading, particularly phonics. Eventually, she was diagnosed with dyslexia. The psychologist suggested Janet as her tutor. I am very grateful that we used her services. My daughter was a year and a half below grade level expectations in reading. With Janet's expertise and the rigor of this tutoring program, she was able to achieve grade level expectations in one year. My daughter was very comfortable with Janet. I appreciated her dedication to my daughter becoming a successful, confident reader.

Our son has been struggling in reading since 2nd grade, each year falling further behind. When we started with Reading and Dyslexia Tutors he was in 7th grade but reading at a 4th grade level. After 1.5 months of 24, 1 hr. sessions with his tutor Kristi Ballash, his reading improved 1 grade level and his reading fluency improved from 63 corrected words per minute (cwpm) to 76 cwpm. Also, his self-confidence has greatly improved and he has actually taken an interest in reading; before he avoided having to read.

I couldn't be more pleased with the tutoring my daughter has received from Janet Menosky Smith utilizing the Barton Reading and Spelling system. As a parent it was such a relief to find a tutor certified in instruction with the system and willing to work with us. I was desperate and frustrated with attempting various things at home to help, without success, and had felt I was at a dead end. I was very concerned with my daughter's frustration with her school work and reading in general. I also did not agree with the school's suggestion that she read easier books, just more of them, she was interested in the same books as the other kids her age. I know my daughter is intelligent, but her grades did not reflect her intellect. And even worse she was frustrated with herself when she tried to read, she would struggle with the words, and then sometimes till she figured out the words she forgot what she read. She hated reading. And not only did it effect her reading classes, but all her classes. Janet works so well with our daughter, and really listens to her. Our daughter feels very comfortable with Janet and I love the positive reinforcement Janet uses when she is tutoring. Our daughter's grades have improved significantly, even before report cards though, we noticed a great improvement in her fluency and comprehension. More importantly though, our daughter has found enjoyment in reading! She asks for books now, no longer shying away from them. I have to say also that our daughter's self-esteem has been boosted, as well as my own. As a parent it feels good to know that what we are doing is helping her and preparing her for the future. I really don't know how we would be coping without this program and tutoring.

Not long after my child started tutoring services with Janet we noticed a difference in her confidence & willingness to learn. Her teachers have also commented on her fluency & willingness to volunteer to read aloud in class. My child has commented that Ms Janet explains things well & makes it easy for her to learn. This is the 3rd type of tutoring service we have tried since 2nd grade & we are very happy with the results.

My son is thirteen years old and has been working with Janet for almost a year. For the most part he has always been a pretty good student, with a "B" average. But, he has struggled with reading from day one. In forth grade, he participated in testing and tutoring by a nationally recognized tutoring organization. He was diagnosed with a mild form of dyslexia, and the tutoring was helpful. A couple years later, as the volume of reading in school and on standardized tests increased, homework became much more of a challenge, and standardized test scores plummeted. It was at that point that it became clear that my son's dyslexia was preventing him from meeting the demands of the increased volume of reading material, even in math (word problems).
Then, though a Google search, we found Janet. Her credentials were impressive. As I said, Janet has been working with my son for a year, now. In that time, I have witnessed a professional, and "personal," commitment to helping my son work through this challenge. During this time, his reading speed, fluidity, and comprehension have all increased. Janet's work has given my son hope, that if he follows her lead, he will be prepared for high school and beyond! I would enthusiastically recommend Janet to any parents who want to help their child through the challenges that dyslexia presents.

My daughter Sarah* was in the middle of second grade when she started tutoring with Janet Smith. Sarah struggled with her reading and was a year and a half behind her peers in her reading level, which really affected her confidence and success in all ways. Janet’s style of teaching was the ticket for Sarah! She was eager to learn and excited to do so. Today, Sarah is in the fourth grade and has caught up to her peers in her reading level. This has helped my daughter in all aspects of her life and confidence. I could not be happier and more blessed to have Janet as a tutor for my child! Thank you Janet for everything you have done for Sarah!

When our son's dyslexia was finally diagnosed we experienced an odd combination of relief and new-found worry. Relief that we knew what condition we were dealing with, but new worry about how to help him achieve his full potential. The referral to Janet Smith and her colleague Julie Medic has been a great blessing! From the first phone call to Janet I felt confident she had the knowledge, experience, and professionalism needed to help our son. She took the time to perform her own evaluation and answer my questions. She provided resources that were helpful in understanding how we, and the school, can work with our son.
Janet placed Ethan with Julie Medic for tutoring, and we could not be happier! Julie is kind and encouraging. She shows a genuine interest in our son's success. Her experience as a skilled educator is evident in her interactions with him. And, most notably, he loves to go to tutoring. Our son, who dreaded reading, is now actively seeking books to read! We are so pleased to watch his interest and confidence in reading grow.
